Please join us on our Joint Active Transportation Adventure Avon Region Active Transportation Plan Kicks off With Public Events Safe and enjoyable walking and cycling options for Hantsport, West Hants and Windsor – Have your say.
Avon Region, NS: Active Transportation has steadily been gaining popularity because of the substantial health, social, environmental, economic and tourism benefits. There is clear evidence of the advantages associated with designing cycling and pedestrian friendly communities, which enable and encourage residents to be more active by walking and biking for recreational and commuting purposes.
The Municipality of West Hants, the Town of Hantsport, and the Town of Windsor have recognized the importance of providing residents with better opportunities for walking and cycling. The three municipalities are seizing the opportunity to take a regional approach to active transportation planning by instigating an Active Transportation Plan for the Avon Region.
The Plan will provide residents and visitors with improved options for safe and enjoyable non-motorized transportation and create new connections within and beyond the Region. It will also address the need for better walking and cycling facilities for all residents and will provide a road map for the plan's eight-year implementation span.
The Avon Region Active Transportation Working Group, a joint committee representing all three municipal units and relevant organizations, has engaged UPLAND | Urban Planning & Design and SNC Lavalin to prepare the plan. The Working Group is encouraging all residents to provide input into the plan at a series of public events planned between October 15 and 19, 2014. The events will allow the consulting team to introduce the objectives of the Plan, receive valuable feedback, and develop a shared vision with the community.
Residents are invited to have their say at:
• A public meeting on the evening of Wednesday, October 15;
• A public bike ride on the morning of Sunday, October 19; and
• A public walk on the afternoon of Sunday, October 19.
Event details will be posted at www.westhants.ca, www.town.windsor.ns.ca and www.hantsportnovascotia.com. An online survey is also available from September 25 to November 14 at www.surveymonkey.com/s/6VJ85KB.
