On July 1, 2015 the Town of Hantsport will dissolve and become part of the Municipality of the District of West Hants. Mayor Robbie Zwicker will become part of the West Hants Council to represent the area of Hantsport until the General Municipal Elections occurring in October 2016. A boundary review conducted during the dissolution process proposed that Hantsport become part of District 8, this will only occur after and if the Municipality of West Hants receives approval from the Utility and Review Board (UARB). Until the UARB approves the proposed boundary changes, Hantsport will remain as a separate electoral area.
Because of the transition date of July 1, 2015, residents of Hantsport are eligible to run as a candidate for the District 8 Council seat in the Special Election in August 2015. Like any resident in the Municipality, you must have resided within the Municipality or Hantsport for the six months prior to Nomination Day which in this case would be January 21, 2015. A candidate does not have to reside in the district for which they are seeking election, only in the Municipality. The nomination form requires signatures from five electors; these electors must be from District 8 and must be on the Final Electoral list.
As Hantsport residents will be represented by Mayor Robbie Zwicker until the General Election of 2016, residents will not be eligible to vote in the Special Election for District 8. All questions concerning the Special Election in District 8 can be directed to Rhonda Brown, Returning Officer and Chrystal Remme, Assistant Returning Officer.
